Laser cut box
The inspiration for this box comes from the studio where I live. The shape of the space is like the Letter 'H', in which two studios are connected to each other with a narrow trasition space between them. Therefore, I started with creating one side first (my room) and then the public space and then the other side (my roomate's room). Following is the process:
To make the process much easier, I reflected the model upside down so for the following picture, the upper face is the floor and the lower side is the ceiling.
Finally, this is the model is of my living space in 1:20 scale.
To make the model looks more interesting, I added my favourite quote from Steve Jobs
'Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish' on the surface and then in between I put my Chinese zodiac sign 'dragon'.
I extruded these sketches therefore it will be more artistic and beautiful (as I want to laser cut it later into a key pendant in a smaller scale)
Coffee Cup (3D model
It takes me a few days to think about what I am gonna to make for the 3D model and finally I decided to make my personalize cup. The dimension of the body of the cup is based on the information find on the internet. Following is my first approach:
My cup is roughly this shape, and then I'm thinking about how to handle the details of the lid, or how to make the cup more convenient to use. In this regard, I refer to the design of the coffee cup. I decided to make a "pucker" lep whereby the drink is accessed through the lid rather than the cup. First of all, I have to make an outlet in the cup lid. To achieved this, I increased the height of a part of the lip and peeled off a small sections from the surface therefore the outlet can protrude.
At this step I got stuck and didn't how to continue. After a long time research on the internet, I decided to make a vent first amd then continue on the outlet. First, I made a small hole in the middle, but then I thought it was too small and it will take a long time to cool the water. Therefore, I made a large control vent, which can be turned on or off.
And then I found a standard of the cup lip design from internet 'a higher dome, ergonomic lip, oval slot. With this information, I kept continue working on the outlet to approach this standard. Also, I have looked through some pictures of coffee cup design. Following is my approach:
The top surface finished and I am quite satified with this so the only thing is to hollow the bottom of the lid .
I use 'fillet' to round the corner therefore is will be more comfortable and I won't get hurt because of the sharpness.
When I combined the lip and body together, that is what it looks like.
I stopped here for a few days because I haven't thought of a better idea how to improve my cup.
Then one day I accidentally got burnt during baking, so I was thinking about how to design the cup body to reduce heat transfer, so as not to get burned. Thus, I planned to add a layer of insulation so that I don't have to drectly touch the cup body.
After this, I thought I finished my model and next step is rendering. The first idea that came to my mind was wood. I like wooden crafts very much, so I want to try it out, if the whole cup is wooden, then the insulating ring is dark wood. However, the cup will look dull as the dark color, in this case, I replace the some of the ring into white leather which make it look more
lively.
After that, I tried to change the material of the body to black leather which looks more real and elegant as the first more I think it is more like a craft.
I made some small modifications on the first design and put them on the grass. This picture looks very real. The cup here looks like a wine barrel, which is an interesting sight.
Initial (3D model)
To start with the letter Y, it is difficult to connect with the next letter B, because the letter Y consists of only three thin lines and cannot form an internal space. With this in mind, I tried to flatten the line to a surface and found that when the line was stretched, it looked like a heart, as shown in the image below. This shape provides a good internal space and still maintains the general shape of Y.
B is the middle letter, and I found it is more interesting if the model has some rotation. Therefore, when I created shape B, I rotated it slightly so that the protruding part at the top of the letter B corresponds to the concave part in the middle of the letter Y.
Next, I try to render it with some interesting materials to see its appearance. I started with my favorite material, wood, and applied it to the entire model. Then I found that when I use different materials to outline the edges, it will be more vivid. After trying several colors, the glossy blue is the best color.
After that, I tried different materials and applied them to different faces to see their appearance. Finally, after I tested all the materials which can be applied on the face, this is what the model looks like. I found this combination is supper cool and each differnt part is made from different material.
After two attempts of the rendering, I found that the material combination I chose all dull and not very shiny. Therefore, in this attempt, I used the glossy black metal and adject the reflection to the maximum. The surface of the model reflects the environment very well and looks shiny under the sun.
Create the profile sketch of the body of the box using Rectangle and Dimension sketch tool (shortcut:R and D)
That is what I get after extrude the face
Use Fillet to round the corner
Shell the box
and then split it from the mid-plane
Extrude the inside circle on the sketch (can't figure out how to make the white piece disappear).
and then extrude the area between two circle
Do the same sketch on the other side of the box by putting a new sketch on the surface
Only extrude the area between circles
Finally this is my box after join together
Exercise 2: Stamp
I create a new component and do the sketch first
Extrude it
and then import the SVG on the top surface
Draw a small circle on the bottom of the solid and create a offset plane on the top and make a larger circle
Create a new sketch on the left hand plane
Extrude it and move to middle
Use loft to connect two circles
Use Fillet the round the corner
Finally, this is my stamp.
Exercise 3: Vase
Create the sketch of a half side of the vase
Use Revolve to form the bodyUse offset plane to separate the bodies two parts
Start a new sketch and draw a smaller circle on the top
Exture it
Do the same thing again on the bottom and extrude from top to the bottom to make it hollow
Separate the bottom part of the body into two parts (Same as doing on tht top)
Draw two parallel line of the vase face
Extrude it
Do the circular pattern for one side
Then do the same thing for the otherside and here is what I get at last.
Exercise 4: Don't know what is it but just try different tools (Following is my process)
